Heywood-Wakefield Restoration

Yeah ok. I was warned. Newborndome is no joke. Midnight feedings… sleep deprivation… a bazillion dirty diapers. How have people been doing this for centuries?!? Jk. Baby H is totally worth the effort - even if I officially can’t have a cup of coffee in the morning without it going cold.

Caleb has been fabulously supportive. Even though he is back at work, he’s found ways to give me little breaks when he can like downtime to make a craigslist run or have a glass of wine on our deck. He even gave me a block of baby-free time to knock out a new piece:

A Heywood-Wakefield Airflow Dresser

FullSizeRender.jpg

I actually scored this dresser somewhere in my 3rd trimester (I think I might have played my last preggo card to convince Caleb to help me pick it up one morning before work) - ha!  It was obvious that the previous owner did not realize what a rare find they had considering they put it in their sticker-loving son’s room.  Just look at the damage to the signature H-W finish!

FullSizeRender.jpg

The watermark on the back revealed that it’s a “wheat rub.” This means it was truly vintage and not a reproduction since newer H-W pieces sport their signature Amber finish.  This piece could date somewhere in the 1930’s-1950’s when Heywood-Wakefield art-deco-inspired mid-century modern style rose to popularity.  I debated long and hard about how I was going to tackle this project and eventually decided on:

A restoration

I was seriously on the fence about restoring vs transforming.  After consulting my brother-in-law the wine-cellar-building-carpenter-and-fellow-vintage-furniture-lover I realized it would be practically criminal to alter it with paint or new hardware.

IMG_0826.JPG

First order of business to get it back to its former glory was to SAND THE HECK OUT IT.  Yeah that sticker residue had to go.

FullSizeRender.jpg

After the thorough sanding came a thorough waxing.

IMG_0828.JPG

The wax gives it a buttery finish that’s much closer to that trademark Heywood-Wakefield buff.

IMG_0835.JPG

This is actually not the first Heywood-Wakefield piece I’ve gotten on my hands on.  Some of you may remember this gimpy coffee table find from 2017 that I ended up keeping for myself.

Although a little patinaed, the coffee table had an original H-W “champagne finish” which, if you ask me, looks practically the same as the “wheat rub” on the Airflow dresser.  That could be due in part to the fact that all H-W pieces are made out of the same wood: northern yellow birch.

IMG_0827.JPG

Sealing the Airflow dresser in a wax allowed the natural golden tones of the northern yellow birch to shine.

IMG_0861.JPG

Besides the finish, another trademark feature of a H-W piece is the sculptural lines - like the unique curves in the drawer fronts and the architectural details in the handles.

IMG_0832.JPG

I know Heywood-Wakefields can read a little too George Jetson to some so I wanted the styling to show how it can still have its moment in the modern day. The quirky lines of this vintage dresser play well with the mod lines of my velvet cantilever chair flip and cheeky llama prints.

And I just had to pull out my face vase and add a touch or two of terracotta.

Chrome Cantilever Chair || 2019 Flip List Item No.2

I know. I know.  I said that my last post would be the last flip before baby.  But what can I say?  She was apparently too comfortable to vacate the premises any earlier than she had to so I’ve been left to my own devices while she takes her sweet sweet time.  Is this any indication of what she’ll be like on the outside?  Heaven help us.

We all know I love me a good cantilever chair (see here and here).  In fact, I’ve been hoarding a chrome cantilever chair in my workshop for a few months now so it was the perfect quick flip to crank out in my impatient 39-weeks state.

FullSizeRender.jpg

It was a gray vinyl with a speckling of rusty patina on the chrome.  What drew me to it was the mod lines and I started to see it becoming something modern and lux.  Plus it was the perfect opportunity to try out a new decor crush of mine:

We also know that I love me a good terra-cotta color but guys...if you put it in velvet then I’M JUST SMITTEN.

As I said before, the chrome wasn’t in the most perfect but it was easy to shine up for the most part using some wadded up aluminum foil and water.

That velvet - I mean COME ON!!!

On the back of the chair, I added some matching chrome nailhead trim.

And styled the whole shebang with stark shapes and vivid contrasting colors (also faves of mine): chartreuse and aqua.

Ok that’s it I promise - I’m officially on maternity leave.  The good news is, with baby’s due date being today and all, this means I’ll at least have one more bucket list item to share in the near future - No.5: the Nursery!  So stay tuned for that reveal and Baby H’s big debut!

Three down, two to go. Catch up on the 2019 Furniture Flip Bucket List.

Dark Record Cabinet

So let me just start this post by saying this may be my last flip before baby H comes!  What-the-wha??? I can’t believe I’m saying that - is this really happening?!  I think she just heard me because she’s elbowing me right this very minute as if to say “Yes mom.  Ready-or-not here I come.”

Since it could take a while for me to get back in the workshop, I do hope this flip will suffice for a while.  Let’s meet this capsule project shall we?

FullSizeRender.jpg

He was a whopping $10 and had really only known life as a printer cabinet as evidenced by the shreds of hammermill paper wrappings and wedged paper clips in the drawers.

FullSizeRender.jpg

He was a little low but made of solid wood with good bones and I knew I really wanted to see it become something special. Between the drawers and the cabinet, he has a lot of versatile storage so I began to see him as something worthy of a suave bachelor pad or the glossy pages of a West Elm catalog…

IMG_0509.JPG

You guessed it - I resurrected our old favorite inky blue/ black color “Black Boudoir” for a moody chalky finish.

IMG_0506.JPG
IMG_0512.JPG

I added some “jewelry'“ to this piece in the form of sleek finger pulls and brass tapered legs.

IMG_0511.JPG
IMG_0507.JPG

That hardware matches the gold gams perfectly.  Yum.

IMG_0508.JPG

Fun fact - those pulls were actually leftovers from this project.

IMG_0513.JPG

The simple sleek design lent itself well to some more masculine styling so naturally I decorated with music and booze... bow-chicka-bowow!

IMG_0517.JPG

I kept my favorite monochromatic formula of warm terra-cotta, a touch of leather, and some plant life.  Oh and a simple nod to our first born… Thor.  He doesn’t even KNOW what he’s getting into with a little sister on the way.

IMG_0516.JPG

The interior of the cabinet has a shelf that could easily fit a tabletop record player when not in use. Or your good booze if that’s your thing.

IMG_0514.JPG

And the large bottom drawer fits standard LPs.

IMG_0515.JPG

So here he is! My last pre-baby flip (unless she comes late and I need to crank something out in hopes of inducing - ha!).
