Emerald + Gold Chairs

How many times have we seen office chairs like these?  Forgettable vinyl steelcase seats with laminate wood arm rests.  I myself saw these on craigslist a few weeks ago and kept on scrolling.

But somehow, on the back-most burner of my brain, an idea began to percolate.  I lazily kept my eye on the post while the idea brewed and just when a solid vision started forming... the craigslist post was gone.

Whomp Whomp

Had someone else seen what I had seen in these chairs??  Would I ever be able to bring my now piping-hot vision to life??  My FOMO kicked in and I started hangrily looking for a suitable substitute only to turn up a whole lotta nada.  Then a miracle occurred.  A few weeks later, the post reappeared on Craigslist!  The chairs had not sold - the post had only expired!  My project had not been poached.  I could I finally try out my hopefully genius (albeit simple) refinishing strategy:

Go for the Gold

Green and gold that is.  It's no secret Chelsea and I love how emerald and brass play off each other (see here and here to name a few ;).

When I first saw these chairs, my brain must have subconsciously flagged them as having all the right lines for a modern, glam pair of chairs.  Once it occurred to me that our favorite faux gold treatment would instantly elevate the look of these chairs, I had to get a piece of that action.

I was too impatient to wait for a sunny spring day to paint the frame so I tried spray painting on a misty morning.  The result ended up being a "beautiful blooper" as my mother would call it.  The moisture in the air didn't let the paint settle evenly which added a unique dimension to the patina.  If you want to recreate this effect (no matter the weather), I suggest intermittently using a spray bottle filled with water while the paint is still wet.

The laminate arm rests were a dead giveaway that these chairs were waiting area seats in a past life so needless to say - they had to go.  I affixed some brass nail heads to hide the old holes left from the screws.

I love how the shiny new finish on the chairs instantly have that emerald vinyl running in the same social circles as trendy high-end occasional chairs.  Such a simple trick to transform them from lackluster to luxe!

Hairpin Legged China Cabinet

Big news!  No like really - this is my biggest-sized flip yet.  Clocking in at 71" tall, meet my first ever china cabinet:

I found him on half price day at the thrift store hiding underneath a wooden fish and wearing some plastic flowers like a laurel.  He was so petite without any legs that I almost didn't realize he's a china cabinet.  But upon closer inspection the wood was in impeccable condition and the sliding glass doors were without chips or scratches.  So I jumped at the chance to bring him home for my signature leg-lift.

I'm such a sucker for those warm wood tones that I couldn't bring myself to paint it.  All he needed was some minor repairs and some legs to stand on.

This piece features (1) a drawer for flatware

(2) two lower cabinets

(3) two sliding glass doors to keep dust off your displayed wares.

(4) beautiful angled lines true to it's Mid Century Modern age.

Also keeping with his mid century theme, I used MCM accessories to style it.  Those chartreuse Russell Wright dishes were a gift from my Aunt & Uncle and I've been dying to show them off.

The brass martini table seemed like the perfect mad-men touch and also a fitting pedestal to show off those fun 1-2-3 glasses I found recently at a consignment store.

If our apartment were bigger, I'd have half a mind to keep this guy!  But my loss is someone's else gain - he went to a new home just this weekend before I could debut him on the blog!

Gray MCM Tallboy

It's T-Minus 5 days to Christmas and I gotta ask: does anyone else have visions of furniture dancing in your head?  I can't tell you how many times I have asked Caleb for furniture for my Christmas/ birthday/ justbecauseitstuesday present.  This year, I'm hoping he'll approve setting aside funds for a headboard.  Or a new armchair.  Or another plant stand.  (I know: I'm trouble).

The good news is, if you are hankering for home decor that doesn't exactly fit under the tree, StyleMutt Home has some handsome new pieces in the garage shop!

In all my pre-Christmas dreaming, I stumbled across this dashing (albeit pricey) devil.  There's no way I'd be willing to pay such a steep asking price, but I was inspired nonetheless.  So when I first saw this chipped white & gold dresser on Craigslist, my wheels started turning.

Pretty close to the inspiration yes?

Inspired by the double-breasted pulls of the inspiration piece, I added whistle pulls that match the brass-capped tapered legs.  The greige color was a custom mix using some leftover paint from our Navy Yard Condo client.  (Waste not, want not!)

Although it looks like 5, this piece actually has only 4 dovetailed drawers - one is a faux double-front with extra deep storage for bulky sweaters and such.

And on the underside of the drawers, you can find the original maker's mark.  Apparently this fellow is Swedish!

The styling for this piece was especially fun.  I really felt like I was channeling my inner Urban Outfitter with the colorful art and moon phase chalkboard.

But the best part is this white and gold cactus by GoodNight Light.

Yeah, you heard right - that cactus lights up!

It is safe to leave on for hours at a time and made of a shatterproof vinyl which, to my surprise, feels more like a matte porcelain in person!  It would of course be adorable (and safe!) in a nursery (one day ;) but for now it's the perfect light to leave on for Thor since we're not getting home before sunset on these short winter days.
